Pharmacovigilance studies the detection, evaluation, interpretation and prevention of adverse effects or any other kind of problem associated with veterinary medicinal products once they are launched on the market. There is therefore an added value as pharmacovigilance provides additional information that is essential to evaluate of the risk-benefit ratio for each veterinary medicinal product. Pharmacovigilance is a shared responsibility between the registry holder, veterinary professionals and Spanish Agency for Medicinal Products and Medical Devices (AEMPS), the competent authority responsible for regulating medicinal products and medical devices for veterinary use in Spain. If the adverse effect occurs in another European Union member state, the information will be sent to the corresponding authorities.
An adverse effect is any harmful reaction that takes place both in people and in animals after using a veterinary medicinal product. This applies both to reactions that occur during use according to the medicinal product’s indications and those observed after unsuitable or incorrect use. Pharmacovigilance also studies the adverse effects related to the detection of waste from veterinary medicinal products above the thresholds set for products for human consumption (meat, milk, eggs, honey), the lack of efficacy after using veterinary medicinal products, and the transmission of infectious agents and harmful effects on the environment (ecotoxicity) associated with use of veterinary medicinal products.
